Supraleitendes Nanoskop für Angewandte Kernphysikalische Experimente
(superconducting nanoprobe for applied nuclear physics experiments)
Aim
A new high energy nuclear microprobe has been installed at the Munich Tandem Accelerator. As the facility differs from the existing microprobes several parts of the system
(e.g. microslits, magnetic lens) have been completely new designed. The facility aims to investigate special topics in solid state physics, biology and medicine. In contrast to common low energy microprobes this facility
uses an energetic ion beam (e.g. 25 MeV protons) with a submicron lateral resolution. This novel approach offers new methods in the fields of nuclear analysing techniques: Measuring coincident elastic proton proton-scattering, 3D-hydrogen distributions can be analysed in micron dimensions. Furthermore, a large magnetic analyser behind the target can be used for high resolution (some nm) scanning transmission ion microscopy (STIM) experiments.
Additionally, a setup for living cell irradiation with counted ions is
installed. In an interdisciplinary collaboration with biologists from
the Universität München repair mechanisms of DNA double
strand breaks are studied using this irradiation setup.
